I WANT TO BE ALONE

Greta Garbo was a Hollywood star in the 1920s and 1930s. She was born in Sweden in 1906. Her real name was Greta Gustafsson. Her father died when she was fourteen, so she left school and got a job. She worked as a model for newspaper advertisements. When she was seventeen, she went to theatre school.

She met Mauritz Stiller, a top Swedish film director, and he gave her a part in one of his films. He also gave her the name Garbo in 1925, when Stiller moved to Hollywood, Garbo went with him. She later became an American citizen. In Hollywood, Garbo made twenty-seven films and got four Academy Award nominations. In 1932 in the film Grand Hotel she said the famous line “I want to be alone.”

Garbo was not a typical Hollywood star. She was very private. She never spoke about her love affairs, and she had several serious relationships. But she never got married, she didn’t have any children.

When she was thirty-six, Garbo retired. She moved to New York, changed her name to Harriet Brown and lived the rest of her life there – alone. She died in 1990 at the age of eighty-four.

SAVEKARYN.COM

Karyn was living in New York. She had a good job and she earned a good salary. But she didn’t save her money. She spent it on clothes, shoes and cosmetics. Every time she went shopping she used a credit card, and soon she had a debt of $ 20 000. Then she lost her job. She found another job, but the salary was lower. She couldn’t pay her bills.

She moved to a smaller flat, bought cheaper clothes and was more careful with her money, but she still had a huge credit card debt. Then she a brilliant idea. She started a website called savekaryn.com and put this letter on it.

Hello everyone,

Thank you all for visiting my website! My name is Karyn and I’m asking for your help. I need $ 20 000 to pay my credit card bill. I need $ 1 from 4 000 people. SO I’M ASKING… Give me $ 1. Give me $ 5. Give me $ 20 if you want!

And they did. In fact, they sent her $ 13, 323, 08 in total, and in five months she paid her credit card bill. Now Karyn doesn’t have debts and she’s an internet celebrity. First she wrote a book called Save Karyn, and now Hollywood want to make a film about her.

DRIVING TO WORK

The best drive

Jack Spencer works at the Cape Otway lighthouse. It’s near the Great Ocean Road, about two hundred kilometers from Melbourne in southern Australia.

Jack lives about fifty kilometers from Cape Otway. He believes that his drive to work is the most spectacular drive in the world. “Thousands of tourists visit the Great Ocean Road every year. I’m lucky – I drive along it every day on my way to work,” he says.

Every morning, he drives to work along the coast. It takes him about forty minutes. “Traffic isn’t a problem,” Jack says. “I’m usually on the road before the tourists get up.”

He drives through rainforest and past waterfalls. As he drives through the National Park, he often sees koalas and kangaroos. “From the top of my lighthouse, I have the best view in the world,” says Jack.

The worst drive

Siriwan lives in the Thai capital, Bangkok, with her husband and two children. Her office is seven kilometers from her house, but it takes her two hours to get there by car in the morning. “We have terrible traffic jams in Bangkok,” says Siriwan.

Before she goes to the office, she takes her children to school. She leaves home at 5.00 a.m. The children sleep until they arrive at school. Then Siriwan wakes them up, and gives them breakfast in the car. The children go into school, and Siriwan begins her journey through the city centre, to her office.

In the evening, the traffic is worse. Cars move very slowly down Sukhumvit Road, and in the rainy season it doesn’t move at all. “Everybody has a car, and there just aren’t enough roads in the city,” Siriwan explains.

. Oprah Winfrey.

People in more than 132 countries watch “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” On this TV talk show, ordinary people talk about their problems and Oprah helps them. She lives in a wonderful apartment in Chicago, and has a farm and a house in the mountains. She has great cars and a plane too. But Oprah was not always rich and famous.

What sort of life did Oprah have as a child?

Oprah Winfrey was born in 1954 in Mississippi, USA. Her family didn’t have a lot of money. Oprah could read and write when she was three and she loved books. She worked hard and was an excellent student at school, but she left college when she was nineteen and didn’t finish her education.

How did she start her successful career?

She wanted to be famous and found a job in TV. She was the first woman and the first black person to read the TV news in Nashville. In 1984, she moved to Chicago and started “The Oprah Winfrey Show”. It was a great success.

What did she do later?

In 1985, Oprah acted in Steven Spielberg’s movie “The Color Purple.” She didn’t have any children, but she used her success to help other people’s children. She gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to students so they could go to college and in 1997 she started the charity Angel Network to build houses for people in need.

Teenagers at work.

Over a million schoolchildren in Britain have a part - time job. Most teenagers get pocket money, but it isn’t always enough to pay for all the things they want to buy, like trendy clothes, nights out and new CDs. So they work at the weekends and sometimes before and after school to earn extra money. The most popular jobs are babysitting or delivering newspapers. They also work in cafes, shops and fast food restaurants, or take people’s dogs for walks.

Children must be over 13 years old to work in Britain. They can work for one hour before school, after 7 a.m, and two hours after school, until 7 p.m. On Saturdays 13- and -14-year-olds can work for five hours, and 15-and-16 year-olds can work for eight hours. Children can’t work for more than two hours on Sundays.

There is no law in England that allows children a minimum wage like there is for adults. Some teenagers earn as little as £ 2.00 an hour.

. An ordinary life … an amazing idea.

Tim Berners-Lee looks very ordinary. He is about fifty years old and has brown hair. He was born in England but now lives in Massachusetts in the USA. But in 1989 Tim had an important idea. He invented the world wide web (www). Tim went to school in London. Both his parents worked with computers so it isn’t surprising that he loved computers from an early age.

When he was eighteen, he left school and went to Oxford University where He studied physics. At Oxford, he became more and more interested in computers, and he made his first computer from an old television. He graduated in 1976 and got a job with a computer company in Dorset, England. In 1989, he went to work in Switzeland where he first had the idea of an international information network linked by computer. He decided to call it the world wide web, and he also decided to make his ideas free to everyone – that is why today we do not pay to use the Internet.

In 1994 he went to live in the United States where he now works. In 1995 he wrote an article in the New York Times where he said,” The web is A universe of information and it is for everyone.” Today his idea of a web, where people from all over the world can exchange information, is real.
